Loretto Catholic School welcomes you!
Loretto School is a Diocesan elementary School. Loretto School opened in September of 1924. Nine years prior to its opening, Mr. and Mrs. Brophy donated the half block of ground to the local Catholic Church specifying that it was to be used as a site for a Catholic School in Douglas in memory of their daughter, Ellenita, who died about this time. After the tragic death of Mr. Brophy, who was drowned in Guaymas Bay while on a fishing trip, Mrs. Brophy surprised the local pastor by making known a project she and her husband had recently discussed. Now her desire was to build the school at her own expense as a memorial to her husband and her daughter, leaving the furnishings to the congregation. (Loretto Sisters Archives, Book II, Chapter 20). The Sisters of Loretto assumed responsibility from the first year up to 1947-48. In the fall of 1948, the Sisters of St. Dominic of Adrian, Michigan took over the adminstration of Loretto School until 1981. During a short interim period a lay principal administered the school. At the present time the CARMELITE SISTERS OF THE MOST SACRED HEART OF LOS ANGELES have responsibility of Loretto Catholic School. They arrived in 1987.
Throughout its long and proud history, Loretto has served the spiritual and educational needs of the children of Douglas, Pirtleville, and Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. It has functioned as a grammar school, a high school, and even as a boarding school, for a short period of time.
Today the enrollment consists of students in single grades from 1 - 8. The parishes of St. Lukes's and Immaculate Conception in Douglas, and St. Bernard's in Pirtleville, have the responsibility of helping the school financially as they are able. One of the pastors from these parishes is appointed by the Bishop to be the School Adminstrator. He works closely with the principal inan effort to continue to keep up the proud traditions and high standards of Loretto.
